CATHERINE MARION AT HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY

Over the weekend we were invited to the "Natural Relaxed & Beyond" event at Hofstra University were we shared our natural hair story in an open discussion empowering black women and embracing our beauty.

The reason why we (black women) have to have a discussion about our hair is because even though hair is an accessory, it also has an impact on our self esteem. There are so many little moments that can happen to a young black girl that can later on impact her self-worth. Little moments like getting a relaxer at the age of 7 or 8, experiencing scalp burns in order to have straight hair hence perpetuating the idea that there must be something wrong with her natural hair. We love that texture preference within the natural hair community, which sometimes is an issue, was also brought up during the discussion. That is why recently we make sure to reveal our true texture before styling to show that all hair is beautiful in all textures.

Facing these issues directly will allow us all as a community to be more self aware so we can make sure we are sending the right message to young girls. Check out some pictures from the event, meeting students and signing our book "Guide to growing long natural hair". Thank you for inviting us Sigma Gamma Rho. It was a great experience.
